The Mekong Discovery Trail promotes appropriate and sustainable ecotourism development in local communities and the non-government organisations (NGOs) that support these communities. These NGOs provide essential English translation and booking services for some of the community based ecotourism products available along the Trail.

In addition, the Trail supports the ongoing research, protection and active management of biodiversity hotspots and the NGOs that are working in this field
